Last week, we asked: Who Raised Him?

This week, we’re going deeper.

In this follow-up commentary, Crystallyzed revisits the story of a man she once knew personally and examines the childhood experiences, instability, trauma, and family dynamics that shaped the adult he became.

From a father’s death at four years old, to abuse, institutionalization, homelessness, survival, and a complicated relationship with his mother, this conversation asks us to look beyond the adult behavior and consider the child who existed before it.

But understanding trauma is not the same as excusing harm.

Two things can be true: someone can be deeply traumatized and still be responsible for the harm they cause.

We also take a broader look at parenting, nurturing boys, discipline, accountability, emotional development, and what happens when children are left to be raised by trauma, survival, institutions, or the streets.

Because before we ask “Who raised him?”

Maybe we need to ask:

“Who was there when he needed to be raised?”

Content note: This episode includes discussion of sexual violence, abuse, incarceration, childhood trauma, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Listener discretion is advised.
